About Hash Generator
Hash Generator computes cryptographic checksums of text or any file using your browser. SHA-256 and SHA-512 are suitable for integrity checks. MD5 and SHA-1 are included for compatibility with older checksums and are labeled as weak. HMAC is available when you need a keyed digest.
How to use Hash Generator
- Choose Text or File.
- Enter text or add a file.
- Select the algorithms to compute. Optionally enter an HMAC key.
- Copy a digest, or paste an expected checksum to compare.
Examples
Verify a download
Hash a file and compare the SHA-256 hex with the checksum published by the vendor.
Text
The SHA-256 of “hello” is 2cf24dba5fb0a30e26e83b2ac5b9e29e1b161e5c1fa7425e73043362938b9824.
Limitations
- MD5 and SHA-1 are cryptographically broken. Use them only to match an existing checksum, not to protect data.
- A hash is not encryption. Anyone who has the input can compute the same digest.
- HMAC keys are processed in your browser and are not stored.
Privacy
This tool processes everything locally in your browser tab. Your input is not uploaded to Utilhex or any third party, and it is discarded when you close or reload the page. Read the privacy policy for details.
Frequently asked questions
Is my input sent anywhere?
No. Processing happens in your browser. Utilhex does not send tool input to its servers, analytics, or any AI service.
Which algorithm should I use?
Prefer SHA-256 or SHA-512 for new checksums. Use MD5 or SHA-1 only when you must match a value that was already published with those algorithms.
Why doesn’t the expected checksum match?
Line endings, a trailing newline, or a different encoding will change the digest. Compare the exact bytes you hashed, and ignore spaces or colons in pasted checksums.
